March 28, 2012 Wed Day 48 Cairns

I snapped a picture and didn't realize how beautiful this finch was until I zoomed in.
Same size as our finches here.  2'' long .

Double-barred Finch

In the afternoon we went to the Tjapukai cultural show
We learned about the traditional culture of the indigenous people with interactive demonstrations of hunting, didgeridoo playing, bush tucker (traditionally relates to any food native to Australia and used as sustenance by the original inhabitants, the Australian Aborigines ) and dance by the award-winning Tjapukai performers.

As part of the didgeridoo demonstration, we were taught how to blow into the instrument.  First you have to make a pffft noise with  your lips.  Immy did a great job.
Unfortunately I was sitting beside her and got a little wet.

This man was amazing.

Dance Theatre.

There are about 240 tribes in Australia.  Each with their own language and customs.

In the back was this interesting tree.  The fruit/nut is about 18'' long.
The Ulysses butterfly, also known as the Blue Mountain Butterfly or the Blue Mountain Swallowtail, is the largest wallowtail butterfly. This butterfly is used as an emblem for Queensland tourism.
We saw this beauty a few times in the North.

After the show, it was lunch time.  Drove to a plaza, and nothing was suitable.
Then found a fish and chips place on the GPS.  Closed.
Passed a McDonalds and decided to eat there.  Great choice.  On the positive side, it had a McCafe, but not my favorite cake.   On the way home we passed another McCafe.  Stopped and had success with the cake and also had this gorgeous mountain in the background with the sun shining through.
Back at the villa we had a quick swim in the pool before we played euchre.  Immy is still in the lead.
Every night there is a cute little house gecko on the window eating bugs.  Geckos are only 2 inches long.  We have been trying to get a pic of him since we moved in 7 days ago. No success....yet.
