March 3, 2012 Sat Day 23 Ayer's Rock

One month from today, we will be going home.  That first month flew by.  Another sunny day for travelling.
Stopped for a fill up.  Diesel is now 1.91 p/l

Bougainvilleas are gorgeous everywhere

We stopped at a town called Marla,  "the middle of everywhere".  A breakfast out again.  Seems like that's all we do, is eat out. It really isn't .  That''s the only time someone takes a pic of all 4 of us.

We are now in the Northern Territories, the speed limit is 130.

Road Train. We've seen pics of 6 trailers, but not sure if they are still legal.

A small town called Kulgera.  Planning to camp here for one night.  Immy and I walked in the office, took one whiff, and walked out.  Dirty and stinky.  No thanks.  Only 270 k to the next campsite.  Another fuel fill-up.  Quite entertaining.  The gas stations are fewer and farther between, so when they see one...they fill up.

Peter taking a nap in our bed.

Paddy Melon.  Native to S. Africa.  Has been known to kill livestock.

                                                                    Mt. Conner.
We are in the desert.  Very few vehicles on the road.
When we want to stop for a picture, we stop for a picture-in the middle of the road.

I read about this spinifex grass with the nasty spikes on them.  Walking in the grass to take this picture.  And let's see if this spinifex really does hurt as much as the book says.  "Why, yes, it does!"   It looked so harmless!   "It really smarts".  It covers twenty percent of the Australian continent.   When the hollow cylindrical leaves dry out, they are quite impressive, they can puncture car tires pretty easily.

Crested Pigeons.

Red sand in between the trees looks amazing. That's why this area is called "The Red Centre".

We arrived at Ayers Rock Resort at 5:30.  Drove 731 k today.  The fourth night's stay is free and not a bad price for a resort.   Has everything except grass.  First trip to the ladies bathroom with Immy we saw a monster of a lizard.  From that second on Immy does not go alone in the dark alone.  lol.

Greetings from the Red Centre.
Love to you all

  2. The red sand amazes me too. I can't imagine golfing without any green grass.
